Nobody Designed Your Language

You've probably seen the videos. They're all over TikTok and YouTube: someone learning English looks straight into the camera and asks, "If the plural of goose is geese, why isn't the plural of moose meese?" Or: "A teacher taught. So a preacher... praught?" Or the classic: "You park in a driveway and drive on a parkway. Explain."

The comments are always the same mix of laughter and despair. Native speakers can't explain it either. And it's not just English — every language has its own version of these videos, its own list of things that should logically follow but don't.

For years, I assumed language was a rules-based system. That somewhere there was a complete rulebook, and fluent speakers had simply internalized it. Learning a language meant learning the rules, then applying them. I don't even know where that idea came from — school, probably, or just the existence of grammar books — but it turns out to be almost exactly backwards.

Nobody designed your language. Nobody wrote the rules first. Language grew, the way a city grows: unplanned, layer over layer, shaped by whoever was living in it and whatever they needed it to do.

Take the word "get"#

I get it. I got home. I'm getting tired. Get out. Get along. Get over it. She gets on my nerves. I've got a question.

These don't share a meaning. "Get" is doing a completely different job in each sentence, and you parse the right one instantly, without effort, every time. Ask a fluent speaker to explain the system behind it and they'll stare at you. There is no system — at least not one anyone wrote down.

This is what language looks like up close: a sprawling, tangled web of patterns that nobody planned and nobody fully understands. Grammar books create the impression that language was engineered. It wasn't — not English, not Thai, not any natural language on earth. There was no committee and no blueprint. What we call "rules" are just patterns that stuck.

So why does it look like this?

A geological record#

English accumulated over fifteen centuries, absorbing everything it collided with.

Germanic tribes arrived in Britain in the 5th century, speaking something that would become Old English. Then came the Vikings, layering in Norse vocabulary during centuries of raids and settlement. Then the Normans invaded in 1066, and for roughly three hundred years the aristocracy spoke French while the peasants spoke English.

That collision left traces everywhere. We have "cow" (Germanic — the animal in the field, tended by peasants) and "beef" (French — the meat on the table, eaten by nobles). Same animal, two words, because two groups of people with different social standing were talking about it in parallel, and both words survived. The same split runs through sheep/mutton and pig/pork. It's a class structure, fossilized in vocabulary.

After French came waves of Latin and Greek, borrowed for law, religion, and science. Then centuries of vowel shifts changed how everything was pronounced while the spelling stayed frozen. That's why "knight" has a silent K — it used to be pronounced. That's why "through," "though," "thought," "tough," and "thorough" all end in "-ough" but each sounds different. The pronunciation moved. The spelling didn't.

English isn't messy because it was poorly designed. It's a geological record: layers of invasions, class divisions, borrowings, and slow drift, compressed over 1,500 years. Every language has a history like this. Some are more regular, some less, but none were planned.

It's still happening#

This isn't ancient history. Language is evolving right now, at speed, in public.

In the span of a few years, "rizz," "mid," "cooked," "it's giving," and "no cap" went from niche internet slang to words your parents have heard. "Literally" is used to mean its exact opposite, "sick" means good, and "slay" has migrated from Old English battle vocabulary to drag culture to everyday praise. Gen Z didn't convene a committee to approve these changes. The words spread because they were useful, expressive, or fun — and the ones that stop being useful will quietly die, the way "on fleek" already has.

This is the same process that gave us "goodbye" (worn down from "God be with you") and "gonna" (worn down from "going to"), just running faster because the internet accelerates everything. This isn't language decaying. It's the mechanism that built it, still running.

The counter-experiment#

People have tried building a language properly — from scratch, by design. The most famous attempt is Esperanto, created in 1887 to be maximally easy and regular. Completely consistent grammar, phonetic spelling, every verb and noun following the same patterns. No exceptions. A clean, logical system built for learnability.

Esperanto survived, and it now has something its creator never anticipated: native speakers. Children raised in households where Esperanto is the family language.

And those native speakers are introducing irregularities.

They're shortening common phrases, bending rules for emphasis or efficiency, letting context do work that explicit grammar used to do. They're doing exactly what humans always do with a language once it becomes a living, daily tool. Hand a perfectly regular system to real speakers living real lives, and within a generation or two it starts drifting toward the same kind of messiness that characterizes every natural language. Regularity doesn't survive contact with real life.

Why messiness works#

Here's the counterintuitive part: the mess isn't a bug. Clean, logical systems seem like they should be better for communication — they're certainly easier to put in a textbook. But language isn't optimized for logical elegance. It's optimized for something much harder: real communication between humans with limited attention, in noisy rooms, at the speed of thought, with constant interruption. It's economical in the way that actually matters.

Ambiguity is compression. A word like "run" means something different in "run a marathon," "run a company," "run out of milk," and "the colors run." If every meaning required its own word, your vocabulary would be enormous and most of it would sit unused. Instead, context disambiguates. Human brains are spectacularly good at context, so language leans on that strength. One word does many jobs because your brain can instantly figure out which job is relevant — far more efficient than storing thousands of single-purpose terms.

Frequency wears words down. The most common words and phrases get shortened, smoothed, worn by use. Irregular verbs like "go/went" and "is/was" ignore the standard "-ed" pattern precisely because they're so frequent — repetition either protected them from regularization or compressed them into efficient chunks. The words you use most are the ones that drift farthest from the rules, because they get the most wear.

Redundancy makes it robust. You might expect an efficient system to encode each piece of information exactly once. Language does the opposite. Word order, verb endings, context, and intonation all partially encode the same information, so if you miss one signal you catch another. You can hear a sentence with gaps and still understand it. You can mangle the grammar and still be understood. A minimal system would be fragile. A redundant one survives real life.

These pressures pull in different directions, but they converge on the same outcome: language has to be learnable by toddlers, producible in milliseconds, robust to constant error, and flexible enough for situations nobody anticipated. It doesn't need to be logically consistent. It just needs to work — and working looks messy.

The structure underneath#

None of this means language is unstructured. It's deeply structured — just along different lines than the ones textbooks draw.

The real structure is statistical. Certain sounds follow certain sounds. Certain words cluster with certain words. Certain patterns repeat in certain contexts. Your brain tracks all of this unconsciously, building a probabilistic model of what's likely to come next, what sounds right, what fits.

This is why native speakers have powerful intuitions they can't articulate. "That sounds wrong" isn't an appeal to a rule learned in school — it's pattern recognition firing on something that doesn't match decades of internalized exposure. You don't know the rule. You know the pattern, and the pattern is richer than any rule could capture.

Collocations are the clearest example. You "make a decision" but "take a chance." You "catch a cold" but "get the flu." "Heavy rain" but never "heavy sun." No rule governs these pairings, and they can't be derived from the meanings of the individual words. They exist because those words have appeared together so many times, in so many mouths, that the pairing became part of the statistical fabric of the language. You either know them from exposure or you don't.

Then there's the layer where what sentences communicate diverges from what they literally say. "Can you pass the salt?" isn't a question about your physical ability. "I'm not saying it's a bad idea" usually means it's a bad idea. "That's interesting" often means the speaker finds it anything but. Native speakers navigate this constantly, without conscious effort, because they've met these patterns thousands of times.

And the explicit grammar rules — the ones in textbooks? They're descriptions of all this, written after the fact. Linguists observe how people speak, notice patterns, and write them down. People spoke grammatically for thousands of years before anyone wrote a grammar book. Children use past tense, plurals, and correct word order without ever seeing a conjugation table. They can't explain what a verb is. They absorbed the patterns long before anyone tried to name them.

What this means if you're learning a language#

Learning a language, then, means absorbing patterns that survived because they worked — patterns shaped by centuries of contact, compression, drift, and the demands of real communication. There is no designed system underneath to memorize.

The instinct is to look for the blueprint: master the rules, then execute them. But that's not how anyone has ever become fluent — because it's not how language was ever learned, by anyone. The rules are post-hoc sketches, written about the patterns after the fact. Native speakers didn't study them and apply them; they absorbed the patterns first, and the rules were drawn up later, like a map of a city that already existed. The collocations, the implied meanings, the thousands of context-dependent shades of usage — none of it fits in a textbook.

What works is what every native speaker did: encounter the patterns enough times that your brain extracts the structure beneath conscious awareness. Your brain is already equipped for it. It did this once before, with your first language, and the machinery still works.
